What would you do if you were Jeff Bezos?
2021 Forbes' list of richest people in the world put Jeff Bezos as number 1. He is worth $177 billion.
Now you know Jeff is currently the richest man in the world. But what you may not know yet is the intriguing paternal history of Jeff.
Jeff was born by teenage parents. His mum (Jacklyn Gise) was 17 when she gave birth to him and his father (Ted Jorgensen) was 18.
According to Brad Stone in his book: The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon, Jeff's parents were married for just 17 months. They divorced and three years later Jeff mother married a Cuban immigrant, Miguel Bezos.
Traditionally, Jeff's surname is supposed to be Jorgensen. But after the divorce, his father never for once played the role of a father. So, Miguel Bezos legally adopted Jeff. That's why his surname is Bezos.
So terrible is the father-son relationship between Ted Jorgensen and Jeff that Ted didn't even know Jeff was still alive, let alone know he is one of the richest people in the world.
In a 2013 interview, Ted Jorgensen said he didn’t know who Jeff Bezos was and he was even confused when the interviewer hinted that he is the biological father of the billionaire CEO. When Ted eventually got the gist he asked, rather surprisingly, ‘Is he [Jeff] still alive?’
Jeff on his part refused to acknowledge Ted Jorgensen as his father. In a 1999 interview with Wired, Bezos said of his biological father, “I’ve never met him.” “The only time I ever think about it, genuinely, is when a doctor asks me to fill out a form.”
In a 2014 interview with the Inside Edition, Jogersen said he regretted never keeping in contact with his son. He said: “A big mistake,” “But at the time, I thought it was best.”
One year later, Jorgensen died and never met Jeff. In one of his interviews he said these touching words:
“I had a number, but Jeff’s mother asked me not to interfere so I didn’t want to call."
“I used to wonder all the time though whatever happened to Jeff. Then I just reached a point where I thought he was long gone. That was the only child I ever had – that makes a difference too. The last time I saw him he was in diapers.”
