|ASUU Strike: UNIBEN Announces Temporary Closure by Seedorf(m): Wed 16, March, 2022|
Following the eight-week extension of the warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has announced a temporary closure of the institution.
ASUU had earlier embarked on a four-week warning strike to press home its demand from the federal government.
It however announced a further extension of the warning strike by another eight weeks, following alleged government’s unwillingness to meet its demands.
The management of UNIBEN announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, titled: Fallout of ASUU roll-over strike: Temporary closure of the University of Benin.
The statement signed by the University’s Registrar, A. A. Bobola, advised all students to vacate the University’s campuses not later than 48 hours of issuance of the notice.
Following the extension of the four week strike action by the Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU, and after due consultation with the Management of the University, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, on behalf of Senate, is closing down the University until further notice.
“The action becomes expedient as there is no justifiable reason for students to continue to stay on campus when lectures and other academic activities are no going.
“Consequently, students are to vacate hostels within fourty-eight (48) hours of this notice. They are enjoined to monitor the situation closely in order to be abreast with school’s re-opening.“Management wishes the students safe journey to their respective destinations,” the statement said.
