The Nigerian government spends about $391 million annually to mobilize and take care of corp members

At least, 300, 000 corp members are mobilized every year.

NYSC was established by the Gowon administration in 1973, shortly after the civil war. The aim of the program was to foster national unity and build national ethno-religious tolerance.

The idea was that if we understand ourselves better, there would be more tolerance and love among Nigerians of different hues of ethnicity and religion. That way, we can possibly prevent future civil war.

These days, many people believe the outfit has no relevance again. The argument on whether to scrap NYSC or not, has been around for the past 16 years.
