This phenomenon is called the "𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭," and was discovered in 1954. It was first observed in the U.S after WW II, and then in other involved nations.

One theory attributed this effect to height:

The British soldiers that survived WWI were found to be taller than those who died. The difference in size is about 1inch.

Now, it has also been found in studies that taller parents are more likely to have sons than shorter parents are.

So according to this theory, the excess boys born during and immediately after the World Wars might be a result of the fact that taller soldiers, who are more likely to have sons, survived the war and returned home.

Whereas shorter soldiers (who are more likely to have daughters) didn't survive the war, let alone get home to make female babies.

Another explanation ( an arcane one) is that the spirit of men killed in wars is trying to come back.
