Almost all of us know what snakes are. They are lengthy, they crawl, they are venomous and human are scared of them.

But here are some uncommon facts many do not know about this reptile.

The Cats in your house, the turkeys, pigs, and guinea hens are natural predators of snakes. Meaning, having these animals on in your home is an effective natural way to keep snakes away.

Snakes do not like smoke, onions, garlic, and lime. They stay away from your home when you have these. Especially when you slice them in corners of your house.

They are weak during harmattan period. They hate cold.

Snakes are deaf, they can not hear any sound at all, no matter how loud the sound is.

Snakes have a poor eyesight, which is why they resort to sticking out their tongues all the time to get a sense of their surroundings. However, they can see in the darkest of the night.

Snakes don't have noses like we do. They have nostrils to breathe with, but snakes smell with their tongues—when a snake sticks out its forked tongue, it smells its surroundings.

Another interesting fact is, Spiders kills snakes—More than 40 different spider species can or will kill snakes.

Unlike dogs, cats, rats and birds, snakes simply do not have the right type of intelligence to recognize one specific human from another. If a snake sees you one minute ago and it’s seeing you again, it has no ability to remember you.

When a female snake is ready to mate, she releases scent as she slithers around minding her business. When male snakes perceive the smell, they trace her to wherever she is. Many at times, there can be over 10 male snakes who will come to her to mate her.

Female snakes can store sperm for up to five years. And they get to decide whether or not they will get pregnant. Different male snakes may deposit sperms in a female snake, but the female decides which of the sperms she will use.

Female snakes have two pockets where they store sperm for immediate or delayed reproduction. When a snake gives birth, the babies can come from different fathers.

Lastly, not all snakes lay eggs; depending on the species they either give birth to live snakes or lay eggs.
