Top 10 Best Action Games On PlayStation 3
The PlayStation 3 is among the best consoles in recent history. One reason for this is the large catalog of games it offers. There is something for fans of every type of genre. Those looking for action-packed adventures are particularly in luck since there are many action games on the platform.
Most of the best ones are either action-adventure games or shooters. Some have you gunning people down with well-designed weapons, while others let you beat up your adversaries in hand-to-hand combat. There are several that even let you use special powers. The following titles offer a mix of different combat mechanics and are the greatest PS3 action games ever.
This collection only includes complete action games. So, aRPGs and stealth titles with a bit of action are not eligible.
Infamous 2
If you want a superhero video game that isn’t connected to Marvel or DC Comics, look no further than Infamous 2. In this game, you play as a former messenger named Cole MacGrath, who has gained exceptional electrical abilities while already being an impressive parkour master.
These special powers are very satisfying to use and make you feel very powerful. However, it’s up to you whether you use them for good or evil. And your morality impacts the overall story of this brilliant open-world title.
Sleeping Dogs
Too many people slept on Sleeping Dogs, as it’s a very underrated open-world game. It has an engaging story revolving around Hong Kong police officer Wei Shen as he attempts to infiltrate the Triads.
The story is good, but what is even better is the fluid beat ’em up combat. Shen is an expert in martial arts, which you use to great effect throughout the game. That is when you’re not driving around beautiful Hong Kong or playing one of the fun side activities.
God Of War 3
The most recent God of War games are more grounded than the earlier ones and put extra focus on storytelling. Therefore, God of War 3 is quite a bit different from recent releases, as it’s mostly about over-the-top action and outrageous hack-and-slash battles.
There is still a story that revolves around the protagonist, Kratos, getting vengeance on Zeus for betraying him. Along the way, the incredibly powerful main character fights all sorts of creatures and gods based on Greek Mythology. It’s wild and wonderful fun.
Max Payne 3
The third Max Payne game follows the titular character as he attempts to do some private security work in Brazil. Naturally, things go south, and he gets caught up in a more complicated adventure.
Along the way, James McCaffrey gives one of the greatest voice-acting performances ever as the main character, particularly when he’s providing compelling narration. Outside of the serious story scenes, the game is an exciting third-person shooter where you make use of cover and bullet time to get the better of your foes.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The PS3 is home to many great Call Of Duty games, but the best is Modern Warfare 2. The FPS title boasts an enjoyable single-player campaign with a strong story about a special forces unit trying to stop an evil villain. It also contains some of the series’ best missions.
On top of that, it has a brilliant mode known as Spec Ops that contains a slew of fantastic missions that can be played in co-op. Plus, it arguably has the best multiplayer in COD history.
Bioshock
The original Bioshock is a fascinating first-person shooter set in the underwater city of Rapture. What was supposed to be a utopia is now a rundown place filled with many dangerous people who have lost their minds due to a substance called ADAM.
Your character ends up there and soon wants to escape. To do so, you have to blast through all the deadly creatures in your way. Thankfully, you have a slew of traditional weapons and some creative abilities that can take down anyone.
Red Dead Redemption
Set in the Old West, Red Dead Redemption follows the exciting adventures of former outlaw John Marston. He is forced to hunt down his old running buddies. Only once he accomplishes this will he be able to see his family again.
So, the stakes are high, but you still have time to explore the beautiful open world and complete interesting side missions. Whether you’re focusing on the main story or side quests, you will get involved in plenty of fun third-person gunfights.
Batman: Arkham City
There are many wonderful Batman games, but few are better than Batman: Arkham City. In this one, a section of Gotham City is turned into a super prison for the most dastardly criminals. Batman also finds himself trapped in there and he intends to find out what the prison’s warden, Hugo Strange, is really up to.
He attempts to do so in classic Batman fashion, as he investigates things, does a bit of sneaking around, and beats up a lot of thugs. The battles with those thugs as well as major bosses is where the action really ramps up. And the combat system is one of the most enjoyable and fluid in gaming history.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Throughout Uncharted 2, there are many moments where it feels like you’re playing a Hollywood action movie. After all, there are plenty of high-octane set-pieces involving an abundance of explosions and gunfire.
This is because things are never easy for witty protagonist Nathan Drake. On this adventure, he searches for the prized jewel known as the Cintamani Stone and the spiritual paradise called Shambhala. Yet, he’s not the only one looking for them. So, you participate in plenty of thrilling cover-based third-person battles against the antagonist’s men.
Grand Theft Auto 5
While the game has been released on more recent systems, Grand Theft Auto 5 originally launched on the PS3 and Xbox 360 to plenty of deserved praise. The story revolves around three criminals operating in San Andreas. They all have separate lives, but they come together to pull off heists and try to get the government off their backs.
The gameplay in this open-world adventure revolves around slick third-person shooting and solid driving mechanics. Both of these things come into play when completing the entertaining main missions and compelling side content.
